Handcrafted Iron Sukashi Tsuba – Rounded to Perfection
Jason Tang
The iron sukashi tsuba (透鍔) is more than a sword guard – it is the meeting point of blade, hand, and art. Each piece is forged from solid iron, carefully carved with openwork designs, and then shaped entirely by hand.
The most time-consuming step is the polishing. Every edge, from the outer rim to the smallest opening, is patiently filed and smoothed. No sharp corners remain – instead, each curve is rounded to a soft, natural finish. This not only improves comfort and safety when mounted on a sword, but also gives the tsuba its refined aesthetic.
The result is a piece that feels as good as it looks: strong, functional, and crafted with the patience of true handwork.
