Koshirae
What is Koshirae?
Koshirae (拵 / こしらえ) refers to the mountings or external fittings of a traditional Japanese sword, such as a katana or wakizashi. It includes all the components that surround and protect the blade, allowing the sword to be worn, drawn, and used effectively. While the blade (tōshin) is the soul of the sword, the koshirae is its body and expression, often reflecting the status, taste, and role of the wearer.
Koshirae is the complete exterior mounting of a Japanese sword, including the scabbard, handle, guard, and all fittings. Crafted with both function and artistry in mind, koshirae transforms a bare blade into a wearable, symbolic weapon—blending practicality, protection, and beauty.
