Saya-shi – Liu Yong(鞘師・刘勇)

Liu Yong is a highly regarded saya-shi(鞘師), with over two decades of experience in crafting traditional Japanese sword scabbards (saya/鞘). He personally selects the wood for each piece, ensuring optimal quality before beginning the meticulous process of marking, hollowing (uchiguri/内繰り), and shaping. Every scabbard he produces is precisely balanced in weight, form, and aesthetics, allowing for smooth blade insertion and secure retention.

Liu Yong is also skilled in traditional urushi(漆) lacquer techniques, applying multiple layers of finish to achieve both beauty and durability. His repertoire includes plain and textured coatings as well as decorative methods such as makie(蒔絵/gold or colored powder sprinkling), raden(螺鈿/mother-of-pearl inlay), gold powder application (kin-fun/金粉), and ishime-ji(石目地/stone-texture finish), resulting in saya that are as visually refined as they are functional.
