Wakizashi
What is a Wakizashi?
A Wakizashi (脇差 / わきざし) is a traditional Japanese sword that is shorter than a katana, typically measuring between 30 and 60 cm (12–24 inches) in blade length. It was commonly worn by samurai as a sidearm, paired with a katana to form the iconic Daishō (大小) — meaning “big and small” sword set.
The Wakizashi is a short Japanese sword traditionally worn alongside the katana. More than just a backup weapon, it served practical, ceremonial, and symbolic roles in samurai life. Forged with the same care and artistry as full-length swords, the wakizashi is a compact expression of Japanese swordcraft.
